Blue Domed Churches – Firostefani

One of the most beautiful and characteristic sceneries of Santorini are the two blue domed churches that match perfectly with the blue sky and Santorini’s Caldera! They are named “Agios Spyridonas” Church and Church of “Anastaseos”, they are public churches and they are located in the village of Oia.

Between Fira and Imerovigli you will find the amazing Firostefani, a quiet village with the best views of the island! “Crown of Fira” is the meaning of the village’s name as it is higher than Fira and offers you a view of the volcano and the city at one glimpse !

Oia

Located on the north side of the island, just 11 km away from Fira Oia is mostly known for the amazing view of the sunset and will undoubtedly give you only the best memories.  Its special characteristics will astonish you, once you see the most diverse and thrilling scenery with caves in a rocky background above the sea. Walk around the narrow streets and feel the hospitality of the locals.  Oia is a picturesque place that you need to explore and enjoy to the fullest!

Red and Black Beach

The Red and Black Beach is arguably one of the most famous and beautiful beaches of Santorini and it is located only some steps away from the ancient site of Akrotiri. From the top, you can admire this unique landscape of red and black volcanic rocks from the headland and, as you gradually get down to the beach, you will be impressed by the different colorings of the cliffs! Many sunbeds and umbrellas cover the dark sand and right on the seashore are some nice pebbles you can use for your collection.

Traditional Megalochori

Megalochori is a quiet traditional village, located at the heart of Santorini’s wine industry, with vineyards all around.  That’s why Megalohori has numerous wine tasting places that you can visit.  Here you can find a mixture of cream and white Cycladic houses with contrasting colourful wooden doors and a few white churches with bright blue domes. In Megalohori you can get in contact with the local people and customs and learn about the history of the village, as people are very friendly and have time to spend with the visitors.  The Hellenic Culture Centre (HCC) is also located here.

Akrotiri Settlement

The most important excavations in Akrotiri started in 1967 and were conducted by the archaeologist Spryridon Marinatos, professor at the University of Athens.  They brought to light multi-level buildings and masterpiece wall paintings. The site was settled in the mid 5th millennium BC (Neolithic age) and it is believed the current excavation site is only 10% of the entire site.  Akrotiri settlement is one of the best preserved all over Greece and we owe that to the same factor that caused its destruction: after the eruption of the volcano in the 17 century B.C., the whole island was covered with volcanic material which played a major role in the protection of the ancient settlement and especially its wall paintings.
